Medical translation
WHAT DOES TRANSLATING IN THE MEDICAL-HEALTHCARE FIELD MEAN?
Medical or healthcare translation regards all those documents that are produced by public or private clinics, medical centers, laboratories, and hospitals. Medical translators not only needs to be specialized, and thus have a wide knowledge of the subject, but also be familiar with procedures, patients' clinical-health processes, medical terms, and above all, with the abbreviations and acronyms used by physicians.
TEXT TYPES REQUIRING A MEDICAL TRANSLATION
A report is a document written by the specialist at the end of an evaluation and/or an examination. They may refer the patient back to their primary care physician, prescribe treatments and therapies, or further diagnostic testing.
Blood, urine and stool samples are sent to a laboratory that performs all the analyses prescribed by the primary care provider or by the specialist. Together with histological examinations, they are fundamental to find out everything that is invisible to the naked eye.
Before undergoing more or less invasive diagnostic exams (e.g., MRIs or endoscopies), or a surgical procedure, patients should fill in an informed consent provided by the healthcare facility: this document informs the patient on the procedure's risks and benefits, on possible consequences, and it must be signed by both physician and patient.
A clinical chart gathers all documents that a patient produces during his/her diagnostic process when they are hospitalized. All the previously listed documents may become part of a clinical chart, together with the anesthesia assessment and, obviously, the surgery report.
Histology analyzes sample of tissues collected during an exam or removed during surgery. For instance, stomach biopsies collected during an EGD. Depending on the microscopic and macroscopic examination, the specialist will be able to determine whether the patient suffers or not from a lesion or a pathology.
I personally perform all translations: your project will not be subcontracted to third parties and will not be translated with automated translation tools, but using instead cutting-edge computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools like TRADOS 2021 (MemoQ upon request).
